Dr Steve Barrett: The Science of Christmas 

This seasonal event brings you not just one, but two, science talks – both with a festive theme – from experienced and accomplished science speaker, Dr Steve Barrett.

Steve is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Liverpool, as well as being a regular speaker on the circuit with a wide array of science talks. The two 30 minute talks which he brings us this evening are:

The Science of Santa

The question every parent dreads – ‘Does Santa really exist?’ – Perhaps science can help!

How many laws of physics does Santa break? Santa is (allegedly) a portly, jolly fellow with a white beard and a penchant for wearing red suits. Although displaying questionable fashion sense, this does not mean that he cannot exist.

The Star of Bethlehem

‘We three kings of Orient are…..’

The story of the Magi – following a star to Bethlehem is supposed by some to be allegorical…. But if we examine it from an astronomical standpoint could science provide another solution?
