A Cut Through Lymm

Saturday 20 June 2026

There are so many stories to pack into this short walk along the Bridgewater Canal banks in Lymm village centre.

There are murders –  two of them – as well as a tragic suicide. There are distant memories of Sundays when boatmen would gather at the Bridgewater Arms for a session of music and drinking. The canal brought new trades too that meant prosperity for a few, but poverty and misery for many more. Let’s not forget the men and women who made their living on the cut itself.

And what about the day the canal could have come crashing down into the village centre were it not for the quick response of one man whose name lives on in Lymm today: so many stories you will want to pass on to others.

The walk will take approximately 75 minutes.
